Let’s talk about attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.
With increased awareness, reduced stigma, and more resources devoted towards people who feel validated by the ADHD diagnosis, I believe there is a wonderful space for naturopathic medicine to provide individualized, holistic care.
I always try to approach healthcare with the idea that your subjective experience is some of the most valuable information I could gather. With something like ADHD, there is so much variety in the experience, and the ways in which someone may identify with the diagnosis.
We can look at aspects of hyperactivity and/or impulsivity and what does or does not speak to you, as an individual. I also prioritize the conversation around cognitive health and fatigue; this is where we can discuss focus, concentration, and memory.
If you’ve worked with me before, you know how important it is for me to also identify lifestyle and circumstantial factors that will contribute to how we navigate and try to execute your health and wellness goals.
For example, there is a world of wonderful literature and research around physical exercise and ADHD. One of the ways I try to tailor treatment options to you would look like a conversation to identify what kind of movement speaks to you. Do you like to go to the gym? Do you prefer to exercise alone or in a class setting? Do you like to walk? Are there any sports or activities you enjoy? What does your daily routine look like, where is there room for movement? How is your energy look like; is low energy a hindrance to your movement goal (and therefore, can we improve energy first and then work on movement concurrently)?
In children with ADHD, it is also important for me to support them through school and at home. Holistic care to me means incorporating the foundations of health, so this is a great time to weave in a conversation around mood, stress, and sleep. It is also crucial, in my opinion, to discuss nutrition and make positive changes. Parents, I see you and I am here for you. I know how difficult some of the suggested therapies and changes are to implement. As I always say, small steps make big changes.
Looking at the whole as well as the parts also means incorporating and investigating other possible conditions that may be affecting how ADHD manifests in your day-to-day life. This may include thyroid health, blood sugar, nutrient deficiencies (vitamin B12, iron, vitamin D, for example), to name a few.
It is my absolute honour to be a part of your (or your child’s) healthcare journey. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions for me.
